EITI Standard 2023

The EITI Standard outlines the requirements applicable to countries implementing the EITI as well as the Articles of Association governing the EITI.

The EITI Standard is the global benchmark for transparency and accountability in the oil, gas, and mining sectors.

As a framework for disclosure and multi-stakeholder oversight, the EITI Standard is designed to empower governments, industry and civil society to promote understanding of natural resource management; strengthen public and corporate governance and accountability; and provide the data to inform policymaking and debate.

Part 1: Principles and requirements

Part 1 outlines the underlying principles of the EITI, as well as the requirements and expectations for EITI stakeholders.

Fundamental aims and commitments agreed upon by all stakeholders when the EITI was established in 2003.

2. How to become an EITI implementing country

Process for countries seeking to apply and become an EITI implementing country.

3. EITI Requirements

Requirements for EITI implementing countries and extractive companies operating in them.

4. Expectations for EITI supporting companies

Expectations that companies are committed to observing when they support the EITI.

5. Protocol: Participation of civil society

Protocol for ensuring the full, active and effective engagement of civil society in the EITI process.

6. EITI Association Code of Conduct

Principles and standards that guide the behaviour of all EITI Office Holders.

7. Open data policy

Recommendations on publishing open data for EITI implementing countries.

Part 2: Board oversight and Validation

Part 2 outlines the procedures and criteria that determine how the international EITI Board oversees and assesses implementation of the EITI Standard.

2. Overview of Validation

2023 EITI Standard: Summary of changes

The amended EITI Standard includes several new and refined provisions that enable countries to respond to the most pressing challenges that concern natural resource governance. It strengthens EITI disclosures and governance requirements to improve understanding of the impact of the energy transition, address corruption risks, promote gender equity and strengthen revenue collection.
