Overview of the Extractive Industries

Today, gold mining plays a significant role in Burkina Faso’s economy. Gold production more than doubled since 2008, and gold is Burkina Faso largest export product with cotton. Apart from gold, Burkina Faso is known to have significant occurrences of phosphates and manganese.

Status of EITI implementation

Burkina Faso is currently a Candidate Country. On 25 October 2011, the Board agreed that Burkina Faso has made meaningful progress in implementing the EITI. The Board decided that Burkina Faso will have its candidature renewed for 18 months (i.e. until 25 April 2013), by which it must have completed a Validation that demonstrates compliance with the 2011 edition of the EITI Rules, including requirement 5(e) regarding regular and timely reporting.

A final validation report was submitted on 1 September 2011.

The first EITI report covering 2008 and 2009 was published in May 2011. Dissemination activities are underway and preparations for the 2010 EITI report have commenced.

Governance of EITI implementation

The EITI structures (a Supervisory Committee and a Steering Committee) guaranteeing stakeholder involvement were set up by presidential decrees No. 2008-810/Pres/PM/MEF/MCE and No. 2008-811/Pres/PM/MEF/MCE of 17 December 2008 and nominations from various stakeholder groups sought and confirmed by ministerial decision No. 2009-090/MEF/SG/SP-ITIE and No. 2009-091/MEF/SG/SP-ITIE of 5 March 2009. --- The Government has enlarged these committees to strengthen civil society participation. Two decrees to confirm this enlargement have been approved by the Council of Ministers in July 2009.
