Use of EITI's name and logo

The EITI’s name and logo are property of the EITI. As a general rule, use of the EITI name (“EITI”, “Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative”, by-products or translations) and logo (as displayed below or a local derivatives) is encouraged and permitted under the limitations specified below.

1. Right to extended use by EITI implementing countries

National EITI secretariats and multi-stakeholder groups in EITI implementing countries (www.eiti.org/countries) are granted rights to use the EITI name and logo in their own materials.

This includes the right to develop and use a national derivative version of the EITI name and logo. The EITI encourages such use and will support national secretariat’s work to develop a national EITI name and logo. The EITI International Secretariat may be consulted before starting to use or changing a derivative version of the EITI name and logo.

Countries that are preparing to launch an application for EITI Candidature may request to develop and use a national derivative version of the EITI name and logo. Use of the EITI name and logo before being accepted as EITI Candidate must never imply that the country is recognised as one of the EITI implementing countries. This can be addressed, for example, by employing an interim name, such as "Preparatory group for [Country] EITI".

The rights to use the EITI name and logo, including derivative versions, are withdrawn if a country’s EITI Candidate or Compliant status is revoked by the EITI Board.

2. Right to limited use by EITI Supporters

The EITI Secretariat grants EITI Supporters of the EITI a limited right to use its name and logo. The following entities are recognised as EITI Supporters:

When permission is given under the provisions in this section, the EITI name and/or logo must not be used in any manner that suggests or implies that the EITI has endorsed or approved of the activities, products, and/or services of the organisation, or that the EITI is the source of any such activities, products, and/or services.

Publications or other materials that use the EITI name and/or logo should be submitted to the EITI International Secretariat in writing to EITI International Secretariat, Ruseløkkveien 26, 0251 Oslo, Norway or by e-mail to secretariat@eiti.org within 1 week after publication.

If the name and/or logo is accompanied by a text about the EITI, use of text from the EITI website (www.eiti.org) is encouraged.

If using a description of the EITI obtained from other sources than the official EITI website, the International Secretariat should be consulted before the material is published.

3. Right to “fair use” by others

If use of the EITI name or logo is recognised as "fair use”, it is not necessary to request permission in order to use the EITI name or logo for:

  • academic research
  • educational purposes
  • news/current affairs

When permission is given under the provisions in this section, the EITI logo must not be used in any manner that suggests or implies that the EITI has endorsed or approved of the activities, products, and/or services of the organisation, or that the EITI is the source of any such activities, products, and/or services.

If the logo is accompanied by a text about the EITI, use of text from the EITI website (www.eiti.org) is encouraged.

4. All other use

For all other use of the EITI logo, the permission of the EITI Secretariat must be sought in writing in advance (letter or e-mail) from the EITI Secretariat, Ruseløkkveien 26, 0251 Oslo, Norway or by e-mail to secretariat@eiti.org. Please send us a sample of your document and indicate where you would like the logo to appear, if available.

Specifically, please note that the following uses will not be permitted:

  • Any use of the logo as a component of an organisation's own logo, trademark or other branding elements
  • Any use of the logo for commercial purposes, including the promotion or advertising of products, services and other activities intended to solicit business
  • Any use of the logo as a permanent graphical element of stationery, business cards or other printed materials
  • Any use of the logo suggesting or implying a certification or seal of approval for activities, services and/or products

5. Rules governing the reproduction and display of the EITI logo

Maintaining consistency in the display of the EITI name and logo by the EITI, in implementing countries and by supporters is an important aspect of the strategy to maintain the EITI brand. Accordingly, when supporters, stakeholders, and implementing countries incorporate the EITI name and logos in their materials for the permitted uses outlined above, they are asked to strictly adhere to these guidelines regarding the reproduction and display of the EITI name and logos.

If you have been authorised to use the EITI logo on your website, we ask that you link the logo to the EITI website www.eiti.org.

6. Breaches of this policy

The EITI Secretariat reserves the right to take appropriate action in the event of a breach of this policy. Possible actions may include, but are not limited to, removing the supporter’s name from the list of supporters, and/or instituting legal proceedings with the appropriate authorities.

Any suspected misuse of the EITI name or logo should be referred to the EITI International Secretariat.
