Chad commits to transparency as it becomes EITI Candidate

Chad has become a Candidate country within the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), the global standard for improved transparency in the oil, gas and mining sector. This was announced by the EITI International Board after its meeting in Berlin on 16 April 2010.

Candidate country Hidden:  Not Hidden Overview of the Extractive Industries Sales of oil account for around 80% of the Government of Chad’s revenue. The exploration of other minerals has so far been negligible. They include clay, gold, lime, limestone, salt, sand, soda ash and stone. Chad also has deposits of uranium, which are currently being explored. Status of EITI Implementation On 9 June 2011, the EITI International Board extended Chad's Validation deadline by 6 months (until 15 October 2012), to allow Chad to bring its EITI reporting in line with the 2011 edition of the EITI Rules. Validation will be conducted in accordance with the 2011 edition of the EITI Rules.Chad was accepted as a Candidate on 16 April 2010. After receiving a six-month extension of its validation deadline, it has until 15 October 2012 to complete an EITI Validation. On 29 March 2010, when submitting the Candidate application, the Minister of Petrol and Energy reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the EITI, and to working with civil society and extractive companies to this end. A decision-making High National Committee, a working-level Steering Committee and a Technical Secretariat have been set up. A workplan, with clear definition of key milestones and measurable targets in the EITI process, including scheduling of Validation has been published on 30 March 2010 and has been made available on the website of GRAMP-TC. Governance of EITI implementation The Minister of Petrol and Energy, HE Brahim Alkalil Ileou is the EITI Champion. EITI Newsletter July 2010: Unprecedented activity in EITI countries

As we approach half-way through 2010, it is proving to be as momentous for the EITI as expected. Although most of the 22 first EITI countries did not complete the validation of their EITI processes by their deadlines, eyes are now turned towards those granted short extensions to complete by September. Countries’ efforts to meet the deadlines have led to an unprecedented level of activity to improve transparency in the extractives sector.
