Overview of Extractive Industries

Peru is the world’s sixth-largest producer of gold and copper and the second largest producer of silver. It also ranks highly in output of zinc and lead. In 2008, mining accounted for 6% of GDP, but provided over 70% of total export. The country is a significant producer of oil and gas. Ongoing development of natural gas and condensates in the Camisea basin is boosting the extractive sector contribution to Peru’s economy and to the Government’s fiscal revenues.
