Overview of the Extractive Industries

The mining industry of Mali has recently attracted renewed interest with gold, its leading export. Other natural resources include uranium and salt.

Status of EITI Implementation

On 29 August 2011, the EITI Board designated Mali as EITI Compliant. In accordance with the EITI Rules, Mali must be revalidated within 5 years (i.e., by 29 August 2016). Mali is also required to publish an annual report detailing efforts to ensure compliance with the 2011 edition of the EITI Rules by 1 July 2012.

A final validation report was submitted to the EITI Board on 9 September 2010.

The first EITI Report was approved on 9 December 2009. A second EITI report covering 2007-2008 was published in June 2011. The EITI Report covering 2009 was published in December 2011.

Governance of the EITI implementation

The Malian Government established through a Ministerial Decree an ambitious governance structure for EITI implementation. Mr Abou-Bakar Traoré, Minister of Mines, leads the EITI multi-stakeholder group. A Supervision Committee, a Steering Committee and a Permanent Secretariat are in place. The Supervision Committee defines the main political lines and strategies of action. The Steering Committee is in charge of the execution of the decisions made. Both Committees count on the participation of stakeholders from government, companies and civil society. They are supported by a Permanent Secretariat. Mr Togola is the Permanent Secretary and serves as focal point for the EITI implementation in Mali.
