UN Resolution on the EITI

The 62nd session of the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution on the subject of 'Strengthening Transparency in Industries'. The resolution gives strong backing to the EITI by noting that EITI implementing countries' efforts to strengthen transparency. The resolution, that was passed unanimously 11 September 2008, emphasises that transparency and accountability should be embraced and promoted by all its member states.

EITI policy and methodology are guided by the EITI Principles and EITI Criteria, and are outlined in detail in the EITI Source Book and EITI Validation Guide. The EITI Board has also issued a number of clarifications and guidance notes to implementing countries. Implementing the EITI

This publication builds on the lessons learned by the countries that have led the way in implementing the EITI. A CD-ROM, which contains sample documents produced during the EITI process, supplments the presenation in the book. The book will help those new to the initiative naviagate their way through the various steps in implementing an EITI program and will be of interst to readers working in the areas of transparency; governance and anticorruption; mining, oil, gas, and chemicals; and overall corporate governance.

In January 2005, the EITI International Secretariat produced the first version of the EITI Source Book. Building on the experiences of the leading EITI countries, the Source book provides an illustrative guide to assist countries wishing to implement the initiative, and companies and other stakeholders wishing to support implementation. sourcebookmarch05.pdf
