The EITI Board decides EITI status of eight countries

In recognition of their progress in implementing the EITI, the EITI Board has concluded that Kazakhstan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Peru are Candidate countries that are “close to compliance”. This was announced following the meeting of the EITI Board in Brussels 13-14 December 2010.

EITI Board agrees status of 20 countries

BERLIN, 16 APRIL 2010.  The Board of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, the international standard for improved transparency in countries’ natural resource sector, met in Berlin 15-16 April. The Board discussed the request of 17 of the 32 countries currently implementing the EITI to extend their deadline for completing EITI Validation. In addition, Sao Tome and Principe had applied to voluntarily suspend their EITI Candidate status. 

EITI Workshop in Latin America

More than 40 participants from eight Latin-American countries gathered in Lima to discuss measures to improve transparency in the extractives sector in the region. At the workshop, Daniel Camac, Vice-Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru said that the publication of the country's first EITI Report marked an important high point in Peru’s implementation of the EITI. Peru’s first report covered revenues generated during the 2004-2007 period, covering most of the extractive companies operating in the country.

Candidate country Hidden:  Not Hidden Peru's EITI website Overview of Extractive Industries Peru is the world’s sixth-largest producer of gold and copper and the second largest producer of silver. It also ranks highly in output of zinc and lead. In 2008, mining accounted for 6% of GDP, but provided over 70% of total export. The country is a significant producer of oil and gas. Ongoing development of natural gas and condensates in the Camisea basin is boosting the extractive sector contribution to Peru’s economy and to the Government’s fiscal revenues. Status of EITI Implementation On 14 December 2010, the EITI Board designated  Peru, as a EITI Candidate country that is “Close to Compliant”. Peru was granted six months (until 12 June 2011) to complete the remedial actions needed to achieve compliance. Peru has requested to the International Secretariat on 11 June 2011 the Secretariat review to complement the validation report. The Secretariat review has been concluded and a decision on Peru's validation status by the EITI International Board is expected on 15 February 2012. CAC75 conducted EITI Validation in June-August 2010. A final validation report was submitted to the International Board in September 2010. The first EITI reconciliation report covering the years 2004 to 2007, produced by Ernst & Young, was published in November 2009 and is available in the webpage of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, as well as through the following link: http://intranet2.minem.gob.pe/web/eiti/archivos/publicaciones/Estudio_Conciliación.pdf.The second EITI reconciliation report covering 2008 to 2010 and produced by Ernst & Young was published in January 2012 and it is available in the Ministry of Energy websitelink to the spanish version: http://eitiperu.minem.gob.pe/estudios.php?idEstudio=58 (a english version is expected to be available in March 2012) Peru was admitted as a EITI Candidate country by the EITI Board in September 2007. Governance of EITI Implementation On 12 May 2006, the Government of Peru published an Executive Decree that approves the EITI Action Plan, creates an EITI Working Group which represents the entire stakeholder’s constituency, and provides a legal basis to the implementation of EITI. The mandate of this working group was renewed by Presidential Decree 5 September 2008.
