AEITI conducts three-day workshop in Kabul

Afghanistan EITI (AEITI) conducted a three-day capacity-building workshop for the members of the Afghanistan multi-stakeholder group from 28-30 March 2011 in Kabul. The aim of the workshop was to train stakeholders in the analysis of EITI reconciliation reports, communication and EITI Validation. On the first day, Bashir Khan, AEITI National Coordinator, provided an update on the status of EITI implementation in Afghanistan, highlighting progress on the preparation of reporting templates for Afghanistan’s first EITI Report.

Afghanistan accepted as EITI Candidate

Afghanistan has become a Candidate country within the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), the global standard for improved transparency in the oil, gas and mining sector. This was announced today by the EITI International Board after its meeting in Oslo earlier this week.

Request for Expression of Interest - Administrator of the 1st and 2nd EITI reports for Afghanistan

The Government of Afghanistan has received a grant from the World Bank to support the development of the natural resources sector and intends to apply part of the proceeds for consultancy services. At this time, the MoM is seeking to identify firms and agencies to strengthening in Afghanistan; the extractive (mining, oil & gas) sector is expected to contribute a significant and growing proportion of Government revenues for country’s development. Candidate country Afghanistan EITI Overview of the Extractive Industries Afghanistan has extensive mineral deposits and potential for oil and gas production. Due to conflict, political instability and inadequate infrastructure, the extractive industries are relatively under-developed. In recent years, the country has seen increasing investor interest in exploration and development. Status of EITI Implementation Afghanistan announced its intent to implement the EITI in March 2009. Afghanistan became an EITI Candidate country 10 February 2010. In accordance with the transitional procedures agreed by the Board, Afghanistan must complete validation by 9 August 2012. Governance of EITI implementation The Minister of Finance, Dr Omar Zakhilwal has been appointed as EITI Champion. Mr Bashir Khan is acting as national coordinator of the EITI process. Afghanistan has established a formal multi-stakeholder group. Additional information is available at the EITI website. EITI Newsletter July 2010: Unprecedented activity in EITI countries

As we approach half-way through 2010, it is proving to be as momentous for the EITI as expected. Although most of the 22 first EITI countries did not complete the validation of their EITI processes by their deadlines, eyes are now turned towards those granted short extensions to complete by September. Countries’ efforts to meet the deadlines have led to an unprecedented level of activity to improve transparency in the extractives sector.
