Clare Short: "Mauritania could become an example for other countries"

EITI Chair Clare Short visited Mauritania from 1-3 October at the invitation of the Mauritanian government. During her visit, she met with His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and the Oil and  Energy Minister Taleb Ould Abdivall. She also held discussions with other high level government officials and members of the national EITI multi-stakeholder group, including representatives from civil society, companies and parliamentarians.

Clare Short on BBC World Debate: "Does Mining Benefit Africa"

Supporting Companies:  Vale Chair of the EITI Board, Clare Short took part in the latest BBC World Debate at the first Mining & Investment Forum in Lusaka, Zambia. Other panelists included Situmbeko Musokotwane (Zambian Minister of Finance and National Planning), Emmanuel Mutati, (Mopani Copper Mine), Andrew DeSimone (Vale), Steve Manteaw (ISODEC), Kapil Kapoor (the World Bank), and was hosted by Redi Tlhabi.

"Transparency in the extractive industries has come a long way"

At the International Anti-Corruption Conference in Bangkok, the rapid progress towards more revenue transparency was discussed at the plenary session ‘Fuelling Transparency and, Accountability in the Natural Resources and Energy Markets’. The panelists included Chair of the EITI Peter Eigen and Director of the Revenue Watch Institute Karin Lissakers.

EITI Board nominates Clare Short as its candidate for EITI Chair

The EITI Board agreed at its meeting in Dar es Salaam on 20 October to nominate Clare Short as its candidate for the next EITI Chair to its Global Membership Meeting on 1 March 2011. For further information, contact the Head of the EITI Secretariat, Jonas Moberg.

EITI Chair Peter Eigen visits Rwanda, DRC and Mozambique

Peter Eigen, Chair of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), joined the new German Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Dirk Niebel on an official visit to Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kivu) and Mozambique on 7-14 January 2010.

Liberia designated EITI Compliant by the EITI Board

BAKU, 15 OCTOBER 2009  The Board of the EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative) held its 10th meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan on 14-15 October 2009. EITI Chairman congratulates Liberia on progress

MONROVIA, 8 OCTOBER 2009 - Liberia has taken giant steps towards complying with the global standard for transparent management of revenues from its extractive industries under the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). In Monrovia, the Chairman of the EITI, Peter Eigen, congratulated the Government, the private sector in the extractive industries, and activists of civil society, who have together accomplished what he described as an incredible job in implementing the EITI standard.
