The Board of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) is meeting 19-20 October in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, to discuss the status of the countries Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and Nigeria. These six countries are currently recognised as 'Candidate countries' to the international transparency standard for oil, gas and mining sectors.

BERLIN, 16 APRIL 2010. The Board of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, the international standard for improved transparency in countries’ natural resource sector, met in Berlin 15-16 April. The Board discussed the request of 17 of the 32 countries currently implementing the EITI to extend their deadline for completing EITI Validation. In addition, Sao Tome and Principe had applied to voluntarily suspend their EITI Candidate status.

The International EITI Board is holding its 12th meeting in Berlin on 15-16 April. At the meeting, the Board will take stock of progress in the 32 countries that are currently implementing the EITI standard. The first 22 countries to become EITI Candidate countries have recently passed their original deadlines for completing EITI Validation.

Guinea has voluntarily suspended its EITI Candidate status in the EITI starting from 19 December 2009, following the EITI Board's approval. The Government of Guinea and the EITI Guinea Steering Committee in Guinea had unanimously made this request in view of the difficult political situation in the country. Meanwhile, they informed the Board of their intention to continue unilateral EITI implementation during suspension. Guinea’s Candidate status will be suspended for up to one year. During this time, Guinea will be listed as ‘EITI Candidate country – Suspended’.

BAKU, 15 OCTOBER 2009 The Board of the EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative) held its 10th meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan on 14-15 October 2009. During the meeting the Board designated Liberia as EITI Compliant, stating: “The Board congratulates the Government of Liberia and all the other stakeholders on the impressive progress made implementing the EITI. “

EITI will hold its 10th Board meeting in Baku 14-15 October 2009. The Government of Azerbaijan, the first country to complete EITI validation, will host the meeting. The 20-person Board is made up of representatives from Governments, Companies and Civil Society. The meeting will focus on the progress on validation of the EITI Candidate Countries. The Board will also visit the Sangachal Terminal (one of the largest oil and gas facilities in the world).
Last week the EITI and its partners held several meetings in Washington DC. Deputy Assistant to the US President, Michael Froman, expressed his government's strong support for the EITI and its principles, while speaking at a reception hosted by EITI Chairman Peter Eigen. Member of the EITI Board, Anthony Richter, reported from the event
