LIMA--The President of Peru Ollanta Humala will open the 7th EITI Global Conference on Wednesday 24 February. Peru was the first country in Latin America to commit to improving oil and mining transparency through implementing the EITI. It is now the first Latin American country to host the EITI Global Conference.

The opening session will be held on Wednesday 24 February, 9:00 AM to 11:00 at the Lima Convention Center in the San Borja district. Other speakers at the opening event include Peru’s Minister of Energy and Mines Rosa Maria Ortiz, CEO of Newmont Mining Gary Goldberg, EITI Chair Clare Short and Chair of Transparency International José Ugaz. The President of Togo Faure Gnassingbé, will be speaking the following day. For the list of speakers, see http://lima2016.eiti.org

As the world enters a new era of lower commodity prices, the need for better and more transparent governance of natural resources is stronger. The 2016 EITI Conference will focus on highlighting the results from implementing the EITI Standard, informing policy dialogue and integrating transparency into how governments and companies operate. Speakers and participants include high-level representatives from governments, extractive companies, investors, civil society and international organisations.

Members of the media interested in covering the EITI conference should send an email to media@eiti.org or call +47 46662888.

About the EITI

The EITI is a global standard for the better management of natural resources. Its Global Conference brings together stakeholders from all around the world to discuss what has been learnt about governing the oil, gas and mining sectors, and how the EITI could better help ensure that citizens see benefits from natural resources. Fredrik Reinfeldt is expected to be appointed Chair of EITI on 23 February. Previously he has been active in Swedish and international politics: as Swedish Prime Minister for 8 years until 2014 and the President of the European Council.
