The Board today acknowledged the seriousness of the situation in Tanzania following the recent post-electoral violence. The Board notes significant implications for stakeholder safety, civic space and viability of EITI implementation.
The Board agreed to place Tanzania under enhanced scrutiny for six months ending on 20 May 2026. During this period, Tanzania is expected to demonstrate adherence to the EITI Principles and requirements, including continued EITI implementation, safeguarding stakeholder safety to enable full and active participation in EITI-related activities.
The Board tasked the EITI International Secretariat with closely monitoring Tanzania’s commitment to, and progress in, adhering to the EITI Principles and Requirements. Should it become manifestly clear that significant aspects of the EITI Principles and Requirements are not being upheld during this period, the Board will consider suspending Tanzania in accordance with Article 8.2 of Section 1 of Part 2 of the 2023 EITI Standard.
