H.E. Mr. Macky Sall

President of the Republic of Senegal

His Excellency Macky Sall has been President of the Republic of Senegal since 2012. Elected in the second round of the Senegalese presidency in 2012 with 65.80% of the vote, he was re-elected in the first round of the presidential election of 24 February 2019, with 58.27% of the vote. 

In February 2022, Mr Macky Sall was elected to the presidency of the African Union (AU) for the year 2022 by the AU heads of state and government.  

In January 2013, Mr Macky Sall was also elected by the AU Summit to chair the Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC), the governing body of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), the African strategy for economic development and international partnerships. He held the Presidency of the ECOWAS Conference of Heads of State and Government from May 2015 to June 2016. 

Before becoming Head of State, Mr Macky Sall successively held the positions of Minister of Mines, Energy and Hydraulics from 2001 to 2003, Minister of the Interior and Local Communities from 2003 to 2004, Prime Minister from 2004 to 2007 and finally President of the National Assembly from 2007 to 2008. 

He graduated from the Institute of Earth Sciences (IST) of the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD), before joining the Ecole Nationale Supérieure du Pétrole et des Moteurs (ENSPM) and the Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP), both in France.

Mr Macky Sall is a geological engineer and member of several national and international associations of geologists and geophysicists.

Born on 11 December 1961 in the town of Fatick (Senegal), Mr Macky Sall is married to Mrs Marième Faye Sall. They have three children.
