Mauritania ‘appening’ up extractives data

Mauritania ‘appening’ up extractives data

21/11/2017 – EITI-Mauritania is today launching an app aimed at providing easy access to key and simplified data on Mauritania’s mining and petroleum sectors drawing from EITI reports since 2012.

This app, available in French and soon in Arabic, was developed by students from the University of Nouakchott, with support from the EITI-Mauritania national secretariat and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)

In a country where 30.2% of the population have an mobile-broadband subscription (source: ITU, 2016), this app enables Mauritania to disseminate EITI data to a larger public and contributes to the national debate on the management on the mining and oil and gas sectors.

The app provides access to data on mining and petroleum activities in value and volume, a list of the main extractive companies operating in the country, and a glossary of key terms related to the governance of the sector. It also allows users to contact the EITI national secretariat.
