The EITI International Secretariat hosted a regional virtual workshop aimed at sharing insights and best practices on the implementation of beneficial ownership transparency across EITI countries in Africa. This workshop facilitated learning and collaboration among stakeholders to promote transparency in the extractive sector across the region.
The workshop was designed for National Coordinators, members of EITI multi-stakeholder groups (MSGs), relevant government agencies, civil society organisations, journalists and stakeholders whose activities are linked to beneficial ownership legislation, data collection and use.
Workshop objectives:
- Enhance understanding of beneficial ownership transparency
- Share tools, methodologies and skills for analysing and using beneficial ownership data
- Raise awareness of the importance of high-quality, timely beneficial ownership information
Workshop structure
The workshop was held in two parts:
Session 1: Wednesday 17 July
- Focus: New requirements of the 2023 EITI Standard, legal frameworks, systematic disclosure and establishing beneficial ownership registers
- Participants: National Coordinators and MSG members
Session 2: Wednesday 24 July
- Focus: Using beneficial ownership data to identify corruption risks in the extractive sector, and linking beneficial ownership and licensing information
- Participants: National Coordinators, MSG members, relevant agencies (including company registers, licensing agencies, and ministries), civil society organisations, and journalists
