Montty Girianna was born in Bandung, Indonesia on 22 January 1963. He graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia with an Engineering degree in Civil Engineering in 1985. He received Master of Science degree in Transportation, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in 1998, and from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA with Master of City Planning degree in 1996.  He received PhD degree in Transportation systems from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), USA in 2002.

In 2005-2014, Montty was assigned as Director of Energy Resources, Minerals and Mining, National Development Planning Agency Republic of Indonesia. During his tenure, he served as Permanent Representative of the National Energy Council (DEN), The Chairman of the Technical Cooperation Indonesia - Global Green Growth Institute / GGGI, and Indonesian Connectivity Working Team Secretary in developing The Master plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia's Economic Development. He successfully formulated plan and model projections for energy governance in Indonesia such as formulation of the upstream gas price benchmark, master-plan for the development of natural gas for domestic industries, formulation of the model projected demand for Fuel Gas,  formulation of a 'feed-in tariff' of renewable energy, and plan for medium and long-term national energy security.

Montty has been in current position Deputy Coordinating Minister for Energy Management, Natural Resources and Environment, Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs since 2014. He also serves as Chair of Multi-Stakeholder Group of Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) that consists of 23 representatives from government, extractive companies, and Civil Society Organization. He leads the group to publish EITI report every year to give recommendation for governance of extractive industries. In February 2016, he was elected as a   member of EITI international board as a representative for Asia Pacific region. 

Montty is a frequent lecturer and researcher in some universities. Currently, he is a lecturer at the University of Defense, Energy Security Programme and a supervisor of doctoral and master's programs at the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia. He was a researcher of Research Associate at LPEM Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia for seven years and a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, Graduate Program, University of Indonesia for nine years.
