Climate-smart mining: Mainstreaming climate considerations in mining
EITI's Gay Alessandra Ordenes participated in the webinar as part of ADB's Asia Clean Energy Forum on 5 June 2024.
Where: Online
When: 13:00 Manila time (GMT +8)
Ambitious global climate policies and a shift towards renewable energies drive increased demand for rare earth elements and other critical metals. The race to net zero has intensified interest in scaling up mining operations to support renewable energy technologies. However, concerns remain regarding potential social and environmental risk factors. This webinar, part of Asian Development Bank's (ADB) 19th Asia Clean Energy Forum, highlighted multilateral development bank (MDB) approaches to aligning critical mineral mining with the goals of the Paris Agreement, discuss recent investments, and elaborate best practices on renewable energy integration and environmental and social considerations in mining operations.
As part of her intervention, EITI's Gay Alessandra Ordenes discussed best practices for managing environmental and climate risks.
Speakers:
- Matthew Jordan-Tank, Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Policy & Project Preparation, EBRD
- Namrata Thapar, Global Head, Metals and Mining Infrastructure and Natural Resources, IFC
- Noelle O’Brien, Director Climate Change, ADB
- Gay Alessandra Ordenes, EITI Asia Director and Anti-corruption Lead
The event was moderated by Declan Magee, Principal Economist in the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Department in the ADB.
