EITI Chair meets Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss Azerbaijan’s EITI implementation.

Wednesday 1 February 2016 – EITI Chair Fredrik Reinfeldt met with President Ilyam Aliyev during his visit to Baku today. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss Azerbaijan’s EITI implementation. Fredrik Reinfeldt also met with members of the Coalition of Azerbaijan’s Non-Government Organisations.

Fredrik Reinfeldt after the meeting with the President:

“Azerbaijan has achieved a lot with its implementation of the EITI during the last decade. The President was positive about the EITI and we all want the implementation to continue. We discussed the corrective actions requested by the EITI Board ensuring that civil society can play its role within the implementation of the EITI. The President reaffirmed his desire to ensure that the government continued to implement the EITI in accordance with the Standard.”

Background

At the 35th Board meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan on 26-27 October 2016 Azerbaijan found to have made meaningful progress in EITI implementation but more needing to be done, especially on civil society engagement. The Board's decision in full can be found here. The Board agreed that Azerbaijan’s corrective actions in relation to civil society participation will be reviewed on 8-9 March 2017. The remaining corrective actions related to reporting will be assessed in the next Validation commencing on 26 July 2017.
