EITI partners with USAID to strengthen domestic resource mobilisation and combat corruption through enhanced extractives transparency

The EITI Secretariat recently received funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to support domestic resource mobilisation (DRM) and EITI implementation in selected countries by supporting work on contract transparency, systematic disclosure and anti-corruption.

The two-year grant of USD 500,000 will be allocated towards programmes aimed at improving data disclosures through government platforms. It will also strengthen the capacity of and empower EITI stakeholders to understand, analyse and use data to hold governments accountable. The grant will also support research and impact evaluation frameworks aimed at guiding EITI stakeholders in ways to mitigate corruption risks in the extractive sector at the national and subnational levels.

A portion of the grant will be used to support countries in implementing the EITI requirements on contract disclosure, which take effect on 1 January 2021. Activities envisaged under this aspect of the programme include reviewing legal frameworks to address barriers to contract disclosure, identifying active contracts and undertaking peer learning events on contract use.

EITI Executive Director Mark Robinson thanked USAID for its continued support and acknowledged its contribution to the EITI’s strategic priorities ahead of the next Global Conference in 2022.

“USAID has provided consistent and robust support for country-level EITI implementation around the world since 2006. We welcome this newest partnership with USAID. This grant comes at an important time when there is renewed interest from countries in strengthening their work on policy areas that contribute to domestic resource mobilisation and anti-corruption,” said Robinson. “Through this partnership, we hope to strengthen the capacity of countries to engage on these issues and link their EITI implementation to broader national reforms.”

USAID noted that this support is part of the U.S. Government’s continuing commitment to both advancing transparency and accountability in the extractive sector and to combating corruption. It also aligns with USAID’s mission to support partner countries in strengthening transparent, accountable and citizen-responsive governance and to building self-reliance.

Ahead of the 1 January 2021 deadline, the EITI is hosting Contract Transparency Week from 7 - 11 December, which features a series of regional and global events to support contract disclosure.
