Stephen Douglas

Senior Adviser to the President, Exploration & Production, TotalEnergies SE

Stephen Douglas is Senior Adviser to the President, Exploration & Production of Total. He currently deals with corporate social responsibility matters, among which the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative where he represents the French oil, gas & electricity major on the EITI Board. In his previous position as General Counsel E&P, he managed a large, diverse team of lawyers and JV managers advising on all legal & joint venture matters affecting the upstream activities of Total.

In other experience with Total, Stephen developed a deep understanding of development issues, in particular in the Middle East & North Africa, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa where he advised business negotiators between 1990 and 2002. Subsequently he served as General Counsel, Gas & Power and International General Counsel, Marketing & Services. He began his professional career in public service with an agency of the UN development system before working in a New York law firm.

This experience has afforded him awareness of governments’ expectations regarding the impact of hydrocarbon resources on their countries’ economies and societies.

Stephen holds university degrees in international affairs (Columbia), law (McGill) and political science (Toronto).
