Open Data Intern

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is a global standard to promote the open and accountable management of oil, gas and mineral resources. In 52 implementing countries, the EITI provides information along the industry value chain. This includes addressing how licenses and contracts are allocated, who are the beneficial owners of those operations, the fiscal and legal arrangements, how much is produced, how much is paid, where are those revenues allocated, and the contribution to the economy. In each implementing country, the EITI is led by a coalition of government, companies, and civil society organisations. The EITI International Secretariat, based in Oslo, supports these countries and serves the EITI Board. 

The EITI International Secretariat provides internship opportunities for periods of three to twelve months. We seek interns with diverse backgrounds, who are passionate about extractives governance and will help us make a direct global impact across our 52 member countries. Our internships provide a learning experience and an opportunity to contribute to our work. While you are at the EITI, you will also have opportunities to learn more about our work culture and to engage with our global network.

Currently we are looking for a Russian- or Spanish-speaking intern for a data collection and visualisation project.

Duties and responsibilities

The intern will work with EITI’s Data team and report to the Technical Manager. The intern’s work will focus on the collection, analysis and utilisation of summary data, and include a specific project focused on the development of a data visualisation tool based on EITI Summary data templates. The intern will be contributing to innovative projects related to open data and how it can be used to improve natural resource governance such as:

  • Assist the Data team in review of submitted summary data files, and document comments, challenges and changes, with the aim of keeping the EITI database up to date 

  • Engage with EITI's advanced data users 

  • Develop internal resources to better visualise countries progress towards systematic disclosure 

  • Develop external resources to better visualise EITI data 

  • Improve automation of regular data tasks (development of macros for translation, conversions etc.) 


  • Applicants must have a relevant post-graduate degree from a recognised academic institution or be in the process of completing such a course. 

  • Experience in data management (mainly excel, VBA, Python or similar). 

  • Ability to analyse and present large datasets. 

  • Experience with data visualisation tools (e.g. Tableau, Infogram, Datawrapper) would be an asset. 

  • Attention to detail. 

  • Fluent in English and Russian or Spanish. 

  • Knowledge of the extractives sector is desirable. 

  • Desire to learn about governance and transparency in the extractives sector. 

  • Flexibility and willingness to assist on various projects. 

  • Candidates must already have the right to live and work in Norway.

We are looking for a creative, proactive and enthusiastic intern to join our team. You must be resourceful, flexible, self-driving, have the ability to think big and start small, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. 

We can offer:

  • The internship is for three months.

  • The intern will be paid 200 Norwegian Kroner per hour and is expected to work 37,5 hours per week. Subject to availability and the progress achieved, the internship might be extended beyond three months.

  • Candidates must have the right to live and work in Norway.
