Mining and metals companies

Vale S.A. is a Brazilian multinational diversified metals and mining corporation and one of the largest logistics operators in Brazil. The company produces iron ore, pellets and nickel. Vale also produces manganese, ferroalloys, copper, bauxite, potash, kaolin, alumina and aluminium.

We recognise that being a leading participant in the global mining sector brings significant social and economic responsibilities in the jurisdictions where we operate. Since 2009, Vale has publicly declared its support for the EITI in its Sustainability Report and reiterates its commitment annually. The publication of our first fiscal Tax Transparency Report demonstrates our commitment to transparency. It follows the principles recommended by international entities such as the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and the EITI.

Statement of support

Engagement with the EITI

Vale supports the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) through its membership in the International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM). In addition to its contribution through the ICMM, Vale provides funding to the international management of the EITI since 2014.

Vale is part of the multi-stakeholder groups (MSGs) in Mozambique, Peru and Indonesia. In Indonesia, the company participates through its membership to the Indonesian Mining Association. In other countries, subsidiary companies have representatives in local multi-stakeholder groups. Vale complies with national EITI reporting requests in countries where it has a presence.

Strengthening transparency

As part of Vale's Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) agenda, in 2019 the company committed to providing additional information about the taxes it pays in the countries where it operates and in all of its businesses segments.

In the last quarter of 2020, Vale announced the publication of the first edition of its Tax Transparency Report 2019. The tax transparency report intends to add details and context to an ongoing dialogue with investors, governments, communities and other stakeholders.
