Speakers at this session provided guidance for junior and exploration companies on Canada’s Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act (ESTMA), and aspects of the new 2023 EITI Standard that apply to exploration companies operating in the 57 countries that implement the EITI globally.

Extractive sector transparency requirements continue to evolve, with expanded requirements and increased emphasis on compliance and data accessibility. Natural Resources Canada and the EITI will co-host a session to provide guidance for junior and exploration companies on Canada’s Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act (ESTMA), and aspects of the new 2023 EITI Standard that apply to exploration companies operating in the 57 countries that implement the EITI globally. This session supported exploration and junior mining companies in understanding their reporting obligations, common reporting errors and opportunities to improve performance. Additionally, participants developed a better understanding of the data that is produced and where to find it.

The Critical Minerals Rush: Risk Implications of Acceleration in Mining Development

Energy systems powered by low-carbon energy technologies differ profoundly from those fueled by traditional hydrocarbon resources. Critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare earth elements are essential components for such transformational technologies. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), total demand for critical minerals will more than double by 2030; and by 2050, expected to grow by over seven times. This rapid growth requires countries, energy policy makers, investors and the mining sector to consider potential new and heightened vulnerabilities — labour shortages, increased cyber exposures, intensified operational scrutiny, geopolitical alliances, and climate change adaptation, among many others. This session aimed to explore the top risks that lie ahead as commodity production accelerates and the multidimensional mitigation strategies available today.
