Government of France to host EITI Global Conference in Paris in June

Government of France to host EITI Global Conference in Paris in June

Conference set to draw 1,000 collective governance supporters and practitioners in a time of rising polarisation.

The Government of France and the EITI today confirmed that the 2019 EITI Global Conference will take place on 18-19 June at the OECD Conference Centre in Paris. The conference will provide an opportunity for heads of state, civil society activists and industry leaders to discuss emerging trends and best practices in the good governance of natural resources.

Responsibly managing a nation’s oil, gas or mineral resources for a better future for both people and planet is no easy task. The triennial EITI Global Conference brings together extractive industry stakeholders from governments, companies, civil society and the investor community. This flagship event provides a forum for discussing the challenges and opportunities in promoting transparency, inclusion and accountability in the extractives sector to pave the way for sustainable growth. Previous conferences have had a significant catalysing effect on the implementation of the EITI in its 51 members countries.

The 2019 Global Conference will address the use of multi-stakeholder approaches to governance in a polarised world.  It will examine the role of the EITI in the good management of the extractives sector, notably in growing domestic resources, tackling corruption, increasing investment and enabling civic space.  The themes of beneficial ownership transparency, strengthening government systems through the EITI and scaling up the use of data generated by the EITI will feature centrally in the programme.

The EITI Members' Meeting, composed of representatives of implementing countries, supporting countries, civil society organisations, industry and institutional investors, will be held on 17 June to confirm Helen Clark as the EITI’s new chair and to appoint the 2019-2021 EITI Board.

Previous Global Conferences have been held in London (2003 and 2005), Oslo (2006), Doha (2009), Paris (2011), Sydney (2013) and Lima (2016). The conference in Lima was attended by more than 1,000 government, industry and civil society leaders from over 80 countries.

Details regarding registration, programme and speakers will follow.
