It is with regret that we have received the decision from the Government of Niger announcing their withdrawal from the EITI.
The EITI Chair, Fredrik Reinfeldt, commented:
“This is an unfortunate decision, because Niger has made significant progress using the EITI to improve its mineral governance. We hope that the government of Niger will soon recommit to implement the EITI and that the EITI in the future can support further reforms to improve transparency and accountability in the sector.”
Jonas Moberg, Head of the EITI International Secretariat stated that Niger was one among a number of countries that are currently suspended for various reasons. Suspension does not mean a country is no longer a member of the EITI. It is a way for the Board to say something is not working as it should. Other countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia have used their suspension period to reenergise their EITI process.
Note to editors: On 26 October 2017, the Board assessed that Niger had made inadequate progress overall in implementing the 2016 EITI Standard, and that it had not made satisfactory progress on civil society engagement. Accordingly, it set some corrective actions to be assessed in a second validation commencing on 26 April 2019.
