Santos becomes an EITI Supporting Company

The Australian oil and gas company Santos has become an EITI Supporting Company. It is the 41st company to express its support of the EITI on the international level. In June 2009, Santos announced its support for the EITI, “endorsing its principles and criteria as a way to improve the transparency around payments and revenues in the extractives sector in developing countries”.

Santos is among Australia’s largest 30 companies. It supplies over 20% of Eastern Australia’s domestic gas, and produced 54.4 million of oil equivalents in 2008. Santos also has operations in Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam.

EITI Chairman Peter Eigen welcomed Santos into the EITI family: “The EITI looks forward to engaging with Santos in the Kyrgyz Republic and other countries as the EITI family continues to grow”.
